On June 9, 2026, Prof. Dr. Apiniti Jotisankasa, President of International Biochar Asia Pacific Trade Association (IBAP), delivered a keynote address and shared valuable insights at the opening ceremony of the “Biochar Production from Durian Peels for Soil Amendment and Income Generation” project by highlighting the critical role of biochar in sustainable waste management, soil quality enhancement, and creating economic value from agricultural residues.

The project is supported by the National Innovation Agency (NIA) and collaborates with various organizations, including Big Trees Foundation, Pak Kret City Municipality, Nonthaburi Provincial Prison, Tang Ton Dee School, UNDP BIOFIN, Sincharoen Veneer & Plywood Co., Ltd, and International Biochar Asia Pacific Trade Association.

This project turns durian peels, which are major sources of local waste, into biochar to be used as a soil amendment for trees and urban green spaces. The project effectively reduces the municipality’s waste burden while adding value to agricultural residues.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the project serves as a vital model for occupational skill development and income generation for inmates. It aims to equip them with practical skills, prepare them for future employment and a stable reintegration into society after their release.

This project stands as another example of utilizing biochar as an integrated tool to solve challenges such as encompassing waste management, soil restoration, job creation, and sustainable social development.
